On Saturday, February 1, 2020 the Quad County African American Chamber of Commerce hosted its 12th annual Scholarship Jazz Brunch at the Hotel Arista in Naperville, IL. “This event was particularly special as we celebrated both our 12th year anniversary for our Jazz Brunch as well as our 27th year of service as a Chamber,” said Sherman Jenkins, Chairman, Board of Directors. “As in previous years, our goal is to award deserving African American college students’ financial assistance for books, tuition and housing. Candidates must have a declared major in Business and/or one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) disciplines.” This year's event saw the QCAACC award a total of $5,000 in scholarships to quad county (Kane, Kendall, DuPage and Will) area college students. This year's students were Stevi Deer of Oswego, IL (Northern Illinois University) recipient of the McDonald's/Laborers Local 582 Scholarship; DeChayla Burnett of Lisle, IL (Howard University), Ethan Woods, Naperville, IL (Indiana University-Bloomington), and Megan Clendening of Plainfield, IL (University of St. Francis), winner of the Ron Allen Memorial Scholarship. “The first Scholarship Jazz Brunch was held January 31, 2009. Since 1996, approximately $60,000 has been awarded to more than 60 African American students living in the quad counties,” Jenkins said. In honor of its 27 years of service, the QCAACC presented its Board Supported “Aspiring Entrepreneur” Award. "The purpose of this award is to help an aspiring entrepreneur to grow his/her business,” Jenkins stated. The award is presented semi-annually to a Chamber member. The QCAACC began presenting the award in 2018 and the initial recipient was Sheena Baker of CarMarc Realty Group. This year's recipient was Shian Jno-Lewis, owner of The Tidy Queens located at 52 W. Downer Place, Aurora, IL. www.thetidyqueens.com.
